THE GREAT DEPRESSION CAN’T STOP BOWLING
Date: 1933
In 1933, just days before the American Bowling Congress’s annual international tournament opened in Columbus, banks all over the country began failing as the Great Depression exploded into a full-blown crisis. Newly-inaugurated President Franklin D. Roosevelt then declared an eight-day bank holiday on March 9, which effectively tied up all prize money for the tournament. Undeterred, entrants found ways to Columbus and put on a competitive show despite the absence of prize money.
