BOWLERS AND A BASEBALL PLAYER IN TOLEDO
Date: 1913
The 13th annual American Bowling Congress tournament in Toledo, Ohio, was held in February and March 1913. Hundreds of bowlers made their way to the Toledo Terminal Auditorium, including Fred Merkle, first baseman for the New York Giants. Merkle had achieved a measure of notoriety five years earlier when he blew a Giants’ victory over the Chicago Cubs by failing to touch second base, an event known as “Merkle’s boner.”
