RETURNING VETS IN TOLEDO
Date: 1919
Toledo, Ohio, hosted the 19th annual American Bowling Congress tournament in 1919, against a backdrop of war. The tournament, which started on March 8, began less than four months after the end of World War I, and many of the bowlers and spectators were returning veterans. Observers speculated that military training may even have enhanced the quality of play in the tournament, since “nerve, strength, and a keen sight” were essential to big-scoring games.
