The Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America (BPAA) formed the Youth Bowling Association in 1963. They worked with high school bowling groups to promote the sport among teens as both recreation and physical education. In 1967, the group held their annual championship in Washington, D.C. The tournament attracted 111 recent high school graduates competing for $21,000 in college scholarships! The junior bowlers were evaluated both on bowling performance and academic achievement.
