DON’T HIT THE PIN BOY!
Date: late 1800s
In the late 1800s, famed stein manufacturer Villeroy & Boch, also known as Mettlach, began dabbling in “etched” designs. The colorful, decorative steins utilized colored clay to create folksy scenes and sayings. Given bowling’s popularity in Germany, it is no surprise that a number of Mettlach steins feature humorous depictions of village bowling. This one reads, “The finest strong throw is misdirected if one hits the pinboy.”
